WHY BECOME A LEARNING EXPERIENCE DESIGNER?

UnfoldEd guides you on digital edventures to become a Learning Experience Designer. This journey has been charted to meet a rising global demand for digital education that has awoken a new appreciation for purposeful and professional design of epic learning experiences. Now is the time to take your first steps on this edventure.

WHAT IS LEARNING EXPERIENCE DESIGN?

Learning Experience Design is a relatively new term and there is no consensus yet on what it means and how it relates to similar processes in education (read more about this discussion). However you choose to define it, Learning Experience Design fits within a wider evolution that is both fundamental to the future of education and based on a long and established history of philosophy and practice. This makes Learning Experience Design more of a new look at an ancient idea. We need Learning Experience Designers now to make digital education experiential. We also need Learning Experience Designers to encourage the curiosity and reflection that a new generation of learners will need to openly explore and make sense of diverse encounters with the world.

HOW CAN THIS EDVENTURE HELP ME BECOME A LEARNING EXPERIENCE DESIGNER?

Your edventure is unique. Each learner starts their journey from a different place and travels on their own time and at their own pace. Paths unfold in every direction and can take you to different destinations. The edventure is folded into three so that we can guide you through each step along the way. These three folds are not linear stages of a journey that simply follow on from and build upon one another. They represent a shift in perspective that emerges from more complex learning.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THE FIRST FOLD?

The First Fold begins this edventure with a basic mastery of how to do things right in the prevailing practice of Learning Experience Design. It introduces the evolution of education that encourages you to completely rethink the traditional approach to transferring content from teacher to learner. The focus is shifted from this passive consumption towards a more active engagement and experimentation with new ideas. The purpose of the First Fold is to build essential knowledge, skills and attitudes that empower you to explore your own personal interests in designing learning experiences.

You will learn how to:
  • Define learning intentions that will enable you to design learning experiences that are focused on specific goals and use relevant themes and interactions with real-world issues, people and places.
  • Design learning profiles that will ensure that learning experiences use content, outcomes, assessments, resources and activities that are appropriate for learners with diverse backgrounds, experience and needs.
  • Develop learning resources that differentiate experiences to demonstrate active care for diverse learners and help them participate in and co-create inclusive learning communities.
  • Deliver teaching strategies that guide the facilitation of learning experiences using different styles and techniques to communicate expectations, promote engagement and share meaningful feedback.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THE SECOND FOLD?

The Second Fold advances the edventure with a complete reevaluation of what are the right things to do in Learning Experience Design. It revisits the basic path in the First Fold and empowers you to start charting your own course in Learning Experience Design. The Second Fold focuses on a critical investigation into the assumptions and interests that are hidden in the current philosophies and practices of evidence-informed approaches to designing engaging, efficient and effective learning experiences.

You will learn how to transform Learning Experience Design with more complex shifts:
  • From defining goal-oriented learning intentions to open-ended observation, inquiry and experimentation.
  • From designing diverse learning profiles to appreciation of how individual learners relate experiences to their own identities and the world around them.
  • From developing helpful learning resources to providing personalised support for the unique and multiple needs of learners.
  • From delivering successful teaching strategies to building capacities to respond to the unexpected opportunities for learning in the moment.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THE THIRD FOLD?

The Third Fold continues, rather than concludes, the edventure by leading you on a lifelong exploration of how you can come together with fellow travellers to discuss and decide what is right for Learning Experience Design now and in the future. It invites you to create and nurture a new community of Learning Experience Designers that belongs to everyone and where everyone belongs. Instead of presenting new content on best practices, the Third Fold fosters new spaces for diverse conversations and collaborations for innovation in designing learning experiences. A network of Learning Experience Designers direct their own process of learning, unlearning and relearning that is needed to identify common problems and shared solutions.
